CROATIA

In Croatia, winegrowing dates from farther back than the Roman times, over 2500 years for the Dalmatian islands of Vis, Korcula and Hvar.

Production : 1,3 Mhl

Terroir :

  • Soils : limestone and clay, volcanic debris
  • Climate Mediterranean.
  • Main grape varieties : Reds: crljenak kastelanski, plavac mali (derived from Zinfandel), babic, dobricic. and Whites : posip, bogdanusa, malvazija (malmsey), zlahtina.

Wine regions

Two main regions: one continental (Slavonia) and the other along the Adriatic coast (Dalmatia and related islands, Istria)

Legislation

There is no controled denomination of origin, but there is a codified classification:

  • Vrhunsko Vino: Premium Quality Wine

  • Kvalitetno Vino: Quality Wine

  • Stolno Vino: Table Wine

  • Arhiv : “millésimé”, with a minimum of 5 years in cellar after harvest and 3 years in bottle.
