CONFRATERNITY VEINIMAAILM VEINIMAAILM

Veinimaailm Confraternity was founded on 2 February 1998 as a not for profit organisation.

Wine as mild alcohol beverage was important in 1940, before and during the Estonian Republic. At the time wine was a popular food: berry and apple wines were made at home and grape wines were imported from France, Spain, Germany, Italy etc.

During the Soviet era Estonians had wines mainly from Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Rumania, but the importance of wine decreased drastically because the quality of these wines was low at that time and of the increasing popularity of vodka.

In the middle of the nineties the situation of alcohol consumption in Estonia was evolving: people looked more for wine and needed more information and activities about wine culture. In 1998 the aim of founding the Veinimaailm Confraternity was to protect and develop newly raised wine culture: to introduce wine countries, producers and fine tastes.

To get more authentic information about wines and see the production process, Veinimaailm organised travels into many wine areas. Co-operation started in 2003 with official organisations: study tour in Germany, organized by Verband Deutscher Qualitäts- und Predikatsweingüter; study tour in Hungary, organized by Institute of Hungarian Culture in Estonia etc.

From 2000 to 2006, Veinimaailm united all wine importers in Estonia and together they organized wine challenges (Estonian Wine Challenge 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) to value the importance of good wine and fine taste. In 2006 began the co-operation with Estonian Wine Academy (Ühendus Eesti Veiniakadeemia MTÜ).

In 2011-2017 co-operation with Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu (Eesti Maaülikool) about possibilities to make wine from non-vinifera grape varieties.

Since 2017 Veinimaailm is member of Estonian Winemaker’s Association (Eesti Viinamarjakasvatajate ja Veinivalmistajate Liit)

During all the years of activities Veinimaailm has published numerous amount of wine articles, in paper and in web magazines. DNew articles are published on sites www.veinimaailm.com/blog and www.eesti-veiniakadeemia.com/blog .

Currently we have 22 active members. We have our own coat of arms and insignia.
